CHEW ON THIS: Bring It! (Part 2)

John 15
1 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the
gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that
doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches
that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. 3
You have already been pruned and purified by the
message I have given you. 4 Remain in me, and I will
remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it
is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful
unless you remain in me.
5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches.
Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce
much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me.
Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my
commandments, you remain in my love, just as I
obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his
love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will
be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!

Acts 2
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and
to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s
Supper), and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them
all, and the apostles performed many
miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all
the believers met together in one place and
shared everything they had. 45 They sold
their property and possessions and shared
the money with those in need. 46 They
worshiped together at the Temple each
day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and
shared their meals with great joy and
generosity—47 all the while praising God and
enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And
each day the Lord added to their
fellowship those who were being saved.

When the church punts on your PREFERENCE… you lose your PASSION

Matthew 26
14 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve
disciples, went to the leading priests 15 and
asked, “How much will you pay me to betray
Jesus to you?” And they gave him thirty pieces of
silver. 16 From that time on, Judas began
looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

UNLOCK GOD’s INTENT
Acts 4
20 We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.”

Matthew 28
19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all
the nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

The ‘filling of the Spirit’ is the emptying of everything else

1 Corinthians 3
2 I had to feed you with milk, not with solid
food, because you weren’t ready for anything
stronger. And you still aren’t ready, 3 for you are
still controlled by your sinful nature. You are
jealous of one another and quarrel with each
other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by
your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people
of the world? 4 When one of you says, “I am a
follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow
Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the
world?

1 Corinthians 4
20 For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.

1 John 2:19 (ESV)
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.

UNLOCK Your INVITE

CHEW ON THIS: BRING IT! (Serve)

John 13
3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. 4 So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
6 When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.”
8 “No,” Peter protested, “you will never ever wash my feet!”
Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”
9 Simon Peter exclaimed, “Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!”

God SERVES you

James 1
16 So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters.
17 Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us
from God our Father, who created all the lights in the
heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting
shadow. 18 He chose to give birth to us by giving us
his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his
prized possession.

God GIFTS You

Romans 12
3 Because of the privilege and authority God has
given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think
you are better than you really are. Be honest in your
evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by
the faith God has given us.4 Just as our bodies have
many parts and each part has a special function, 5 so
it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one
body, and we all belong to each other.
6 In his grace, God has given us different gifts for
doing certain things well. So if God has given you the
ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as
God has given you. 7 If your gift is serving others,
serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8 If
your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it
is giving, give generously. If God has given you
leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously.
And if you have a gift for showing kindness to
others, do it gladly.
9 Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love
them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is
good. 10 Love each other with genuine affection,
and take delight in honoring each other.

John 13
12 After washing their feet, he put on his robe
again and sat down and asked,“Do you
understand what I was doing? 13 You call me
‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because
that’s what I am. 14 And since I, your Lord and
Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to
wash each other’s feet. 15 I have given you an
example to follow. Do as I have done to you. 16 I
tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their
master. Nor is the messenger more important
than the one who sends the message. 17 Now
that you know these things, God will bless you
for doing them.

GO with the FLOW

Matthew 20
25 But Jesus called them together and said, “You
know that the rulers in this world lord it over their
people, and officials flaunt their authority over those
under them. 26 But among you it will be different.
Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be
your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first
among you must become your slave. 28 For even the
Son of Man came not to be served but to serve
others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

LEGGO MY EGO!!!!

CHEW ON THIS: Love Is a Battlefield – Part 6

“What is my purpose in my relationships?”

Genesis 1:26a-27 26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us….” 27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Genesis 2:18 Then the Lord God said, “it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”

ULTIMATE PURPOSE…OUR RELATIONSHIP W/ GOD

PURPOSE: The reason for which something is done or created or exists. Intention. Aim. Goal.

John 3:16-17 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.NLT

Matthew 22:37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.

GOD IS TO BE OUR FIRST LOVE

Jeremiah 32:38-40 They will be my people, and I will be their God 39 And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants. 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me. NLT

If Christ is not FIRST, then all my relationships are a cheap substitute at best and a destructive force at worst.

Romans 5:10-11 10 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. NLT

MISGUIDED PURPOSES
Need-driven
Fear-driven
Feeling-driven
“My kingdom”-driven
Boundary driven

Mark 12:31 The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these. NLT

Matthew 19-20a 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations,[a] baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you…

Our Ultimate Purpose in Relationship with Others: LOVE THEM & ENCOURAGE THEM TO LOVE JESUS

James 1:16-17 So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

Jeremiah 17:5, 7
5 This is what the LORD says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the LORD. 7 “But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence.

God may call you to a one-way friendship.

1 John 3:16 We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.

Real question: “which person are you?”

Matthew 22:39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Matthew 5:43-44 “You have heard the law that says love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 but I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!” NLT

Galatians 5:13-14 13 For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. 14 For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.

I Peter 4:10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

Proverbs 13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.

Psalm 1:1-3
1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.

Proverbs 13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.

Proverbs 1:7 NLT “Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

Proverbs 28:26 NLT “Those who trust their own insight are foolish, but anyone who walks in wisdom is safe.”

Ecclesiastes 10:2 NLT “A wise person chooses the right road; a fool takes the wrong one.”

What kind of friend are you?

1 Peter 3:1b-2 “ …Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. They will be won over 2 by observing your pure and reverent lives.” NLT

Psalm 139:23-24
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

1 John 1:9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

Hebrews 12:14-15 14 Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. 15 Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.

CHEW ON THIS: Love Is a Battlefield – Part 5

Genesis 2
24 This explains why a man leaves his father and
mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are
united into one.

Ephesians 6
1 Children, obey your parents because you belong to
the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. 2 “Honor
your father and mother.” This is the first
commandment with a promise: 3 If you honor your
father and mother, “things will go well for you, and
you will have a long life on the earth.”
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by
the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with
the discipline and instruction that comes from the
Lord.

LEAVE

CLEAVE

1+1= ONE

LOVE!

Ephesians 4
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh
words, and slander, as well as all types of evil
behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God
through Christ has forgiven you.

CHEW ON THIS: Love Is a Battlefield – Part 4

Genesis 2
18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the
man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right
for him.” 19 So the LORD God formed from the
ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the
sky. He brought them to the man to see what he
would call them, and the man chose a name for each
one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the
birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still
there was no helper just right for him.
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a
deep sleep. While the man slept, the LORD God took
out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening.
22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib,
and he brought her to the man.
23 “At Last” the man exclaimed.
“This one is bone from my bone,
and flesh from my flesh!
She will be called ‘woman,’
because she was taken from ‘man.’”
24 This explains why a man leaves his father and
mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are
united into one.
25 Now the man and his wife were both naked,
but they felt no shame.

SEX LIES
SEX: A THIRST to be QUENCHED
SEX: the NECESSARY EVIL
SEX: the ultimate SELF EXPRESSION
SEX: Marriage is a KILL-JOY

1 Corinthians 7
3 The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs,
and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs. 4 The
wife gives authority over her body to her husband,
and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife.
5 Do not deprive each other of sexual relations,
unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy
for a limited time so you can give yourselves more
completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come
together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt
you because of your lack of self-control.

Before SIN there was SEX

God gives good sex

MAN ➞ WOMAN ➞ MARRIAGE ➞ LIFETIME

GOOD SEX is COVENANT SEX

COVENANT SEX is SAFE SEX

1 Corinthians 6
15 Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually
parts of Christ? Should a man take his body,
which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute?
Never! 16 And don’t you realize that if a man joins
himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body
with her? For the Scriptures say, “The two are united
into one.” 17 But the person who is joined to the Lord
is one spirit with him.
18 Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly
affects the body as this one does. For sexual
immorality is a sin against your own body. 19 Don’t
you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy
Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you
with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

Sex a PRIVATE ACT with PUBLIC IMPACT

There’s a difference between PRIVACY and SECRECY

Step 1: Confession & Repentance

Ezekiel 36
26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a
new spirit in you. I will take out your stony,
stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive
heart. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you so that
you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey
my regulations.

Be VERBALLY GENEROUS with your spouse

Song of Solomon 4
Solomon:
3 Your lips are like scarlet ribbon;
your mouth is inviting.
Your cheeks are like rosy pomegranates
behind your veil.
4 Your neck is as beautiful as the tower of David,
jeweled with the shields of a thousand heroes.
5 Your breasts are like two fawns, twin fawns of
a gazelle grazing among the lilies.
6 Before the dawn breezes blow
and the night shadows flee,
I will hurry to the mountain of myrrh
and to the hill of frankincense.
7 You are altogether beautiful, my darling,
beautiful in every way.
8 Come with me from Lebanon, my bride,
come with me from Lebanon.
Come down from Mount Amana,
from the peaks of Senir and Hermon,
where the lions have their dens
and leopards live among the hills.

Sex begins OUTSIDE the bedroom

Be VISUALLY GENEROUS with your spouse

Song of Solomon 6
Young Woman:
13… Why should you look upon the Shulammite,
as upon a dance before two armies?

Song of Solomon 7
Solomon:
1 How beautiful are your sandaled feet,
O queenly maiden.
Your rounded thighs are like jewels,
the work of a skilled craftsman.

Be CREATIVE with your spouse

Song of Solomon 7
Young Woman:
10 I am my lover’s,
and he claims me as his own.
11 Come, my love, let us go out to the fields
and spend the night among the wildflowers.
12 Let us get up early and go to the vineyards to
see if the grapevines have budded, if the
blossoms have opened,
and if the pomegranates have bloomed.
There I will give you my love.
13 There the mandrakes give off their fragrance, and
the finest fruits are at our door, new delights as well
as old, which I have saved for you, my lover.
Proverbs 5
18 Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you.
Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 She is a loving deer, a graceful doe.
Let her breasts satisfy you always.
May you always be captivated by her love.
20 Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral
woman, or fondle the breasts of a promiscuous
woman?

CHEW ON THIS: Love Is a Battlefield (Part 3)

Matthew 12
33 “A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad. 34 You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. 35 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. 36 And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”

Luke 6
45…What you say flows from what is in your heart.

Jeremiah 17
9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,  and desperately wicked.  Who really knows how bad it is?

Colossians 3
12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
16 Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. 17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

Re-define the WIN

QUICK – SLOW – SLOW

James 1
19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. 20 Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. 21 So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.

Aim for ACCURACY

Proverbs 15
28 The heart of the godly thinks carefully before speaking; the mouth of the wicked overflows with evil words.

Proverbs 10
19 Too much talk leads to sin.
Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.

Proverbs 21
9 It is better to live in a corner of the housetop
than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife. (ESV)

Redeem your relationship… one word at a time

CHEW ON THIS: LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD – PART 2

Genesis 3
16 …And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.”

Ephesians 5
21 And further, submit to one another out of
reverence for Christ.
22 For wives, this means submit to your husbands
as to the Lord. 23 For a husband is the head of his
wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the
Savior of his body, the church. 24 As the church
submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your
husbands in everything.
25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26
to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing
of God’s word. 27 He did this to present her to
himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle
or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and
without fault. 28 In the same way, husbands ought to

or a man who loves his wife actually shows love
for himself. 29 No one hates his own body but
love their wives as they love their own bodies.
feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the
church. 30 And we are members of his body.
31 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his
father and mother and is joined to his wife, and
the two are united into one.” 32 This is a great
mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ
and the church are one. 33 So again I say, each
man must love his wife as he loves himself, and
the wife must respect her husband.

Colossians 3
18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for
those who belong to the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives and never treat them
harshly.
20 Children, always obey your parents, for this
pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not aggravate your
children, or they will become discouraged.

Titus 2
4 These older women must train the younger women
to love their husbands and their children, 5 to live
wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do
good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then
they will not bring shame on the word of God.

SUBMISSION SUSPICION

There are MUTUAL RESPONSIBILITIES to ONE ANOTHE

WOMEN: loyally LOVE

What does this look like?

How you follow the ROLES will REVEAL what you think about God

Matthew 26
39 He went on a little farther and bowed with his face
to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let
this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I
want your will to be done, not mine.”

1 Peter 3
1 In the same way, you wives must accept the
authority of your husbands. Then, even if some
refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives
will speak to them without any words. They will
be won over 2 by observing your pure and
reverent lives.

The husband is AN authority, but not the ULTIMATE authority

MEN: lovingly LEAD

1 Peter 3
7 In the same way, you husbands must give
honor to your wives. Treat your wife with
understanding as you live together. She may be
weaker than you are, but she is your equal
partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you
should so your prayers will not be hindered.

FOLLOW THE ROLES!

1 Peter 3
8 Finally, all of you should be of one mind.
Sympathize with each other. Love each other as
brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a
humble attitude. 9 Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t
retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead,
pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has
called you to do, and he will bless you for it.

CHEW ON THIS: LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD – Part 1

Genesis 2
15 The LORD God placed the man in the Garden of
Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the LORD
God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of
every tree in the garden— 17 except the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you
are sure to die.”
18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the
man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right
for him.” 19 So the LORD God formed from the
ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the
sky. He brought them to the man to see what he
would call them, and the man chose a name for each
one.20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the
birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still
there was no helper just right for him.
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a
deep sleep. While the man slept, the LORD God took
out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening.
22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib,
and he brought her to the man.
23 the man exclaimed.

Genesis 3
16 …And you will desire to control your
husband, but he will rule over you.”

Romans 5
18 Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for
everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness
brings a right relationship with God and new life
for everyone.19 Because one person disobeyed
God, many became sinners. But because one
other person obeyed God, many will be made
righteous.

Will my marriage be a BATTLEFIELD or a BLESSING

Matthew 19
5 And he said, ‘This explains why a man leaves
his father and mother and is joined to his wife,
and the two are united into one.’ 6 Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what
God has joined together.”

First, embrace Covenant Love

Ecclesiastes 4
12 A person standing alone can be attacked and
defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and
conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-
braided cord is not easily broken.

Choose covenant love… It has already chosen you!

MEN: lovingly LEAD
WOMEN: loyally LOVE

CHEW ON THIS: THERE’S NO APP FOR SELF CONTROL

Romans 6
16 Don’t you realize that you become the slave of
whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to
sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey
God, which leads to righteous living.

Can you envision FREEDOM?

Galatians 5
16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives.
Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature
craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil,
which is just the opposite of what the Spirit
wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the
opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These
two forces are constantly fighting each other, so
you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you
are not under obligation to the law of Moses.
19 When you follow the desires of your sinful
nature, the results are very clear: sexual
immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry,
sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts
of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division,21
envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins
like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before,
that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit
the Kingdom of God.
22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit
in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-
control. There is no law against these things!
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have
nailed the passions and desires of their sinful
nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25
Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the
Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

Psalm 104
13 You send rain on the mountains from your
heavenly home, and you fill the earth with the fruit of
your labor.
14 You cause grass to grow for the livestock
and plants for people to use.
You allow them to produce food from the earth
15 wine to make them glad,
olive oil to soothe their skin,
and bread to give them strength.

Deuteronomy 14
24 “Now when the Lord your God blesses you with a
good harvest, the place of worship he chooses for his
name to be honored might be too far for you to bring
the tithe. 25 If so, you may sell the tithe portion of
your crops and herds, put the money in a pouch, and
go to the place the Lord your God has chosen. 26
When you arrive, you may use the money to buy any
kind of food you want—cattle, sheep, goats, wine, or
other alcoholic drink. Then feast there in the presence
of the Lord your God and celebrate with your
household.

Psalm 4
7 You have put more joy in my heart than they have
when their grain and wine abound. -esv

Ecclesiastes 9
7 So go ahead. Eat your food with joy, and drink
your wine with a happy heart, for God approves
of this!

John 2
9 When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now
wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the
servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. 10 “A host always
serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has
had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you
have kept the best until now!”

Matthew 11
18 For John didn’t spend his time eating and
drinking, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a
demon.’ 19 The Son of Man, on the other hand,
feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton
and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and
other sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right
by its results.”

Martin Luther
“Do you suppose that abuses are eliminated by
destroying the object which is abused? Men can
go wrong with wine and women. Shall we then
prohibit and abolish women?”

Ecclesiastes 10
17 Happy is the land whose king is a noble leader
and whose leaders feast at the proper time to gain

Ephesians 5
18 Don’t be drunk with with wine, because that will
ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit

Romans 13
13 Because we belong to the day, we must live
decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the
darkness of wild parties and drunkenness… 14
Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord
Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways
to indulge your evil desires.

Romans 14
14 I know and am convinced on the authority of
the Lord Jesus that no food, in and of itself, is
wrong to eat. But if someone believes it is wrong,
then for that person it is wrong.

Do the gifts YOU HAVE actually HAVE YOU?

Don’t BIND OTHERS with your CONSCIENCE

1 Timothy 4
3 They will say it is wrong to be married and
wrong to eat certain foods. But God created
those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful
people who know the truth. 4 Since everything
God created is good, we should not reject any of
it but receive it with thanks. 5 For we know it is
made acceptable by the word of God and prayer.

1 Corinthians 10
31 So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do,
do it all for the glory of God.

How can I achieve FREEDOM and SELF CONTROL?

Hebrews 12
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a
huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us
strip off every weight that slows us down, especially
the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with
endurance the race God has set before us. 2 We do
this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion
who initiates and perfects our faith.

Matthew 6
33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and
live righteously, and he will give you everything
you need.

CHEW ON THIS: THERE’S NO APP FOR DEPRESSION

Psalm 22
1 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help?
2 Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night you hear my voice, but I find no relief.

Psalm 69
1 Save me, O God,
for the floodwaters are up to my neck.
2 Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire;
I can’t find a foothold.
I am in deep water,
and the floods overwhelm me.
3 I am exhausted from crying for help;
my throat is parched.
My eyes are swollen with weeping,
waiting for my God to help me.

Psalm 88
13 O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.
14 O LORD, why do you reject me?
Why do you turn your face from me?
18 You have taken away my companions and
loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.

Psalm 139
7 I can never escape from your Spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
8 If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the grave, you are there.
9 If I ride the wings of the morning,
if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
and your strength will support me.
11 I could ask the darkness to hide me
and the light around me to become night—
12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from
you. To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.

Matthew 26
36 Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove
called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I
go over there to pray.” 37 He took Peter and
Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he
became anguished and distressed. 38 He told
them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point
of death…”

Isaiah 53
3 He was despised and rejected—
a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our backs on him and looked the other
way. He was despised, and we did not care.
4 Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows that weighed him down.

Hebrews 4
15 This High Priest of ours understands our
weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we
do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the
throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his
mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we
need it most.

ROOT #1: SIN

Psalm 32
3 When I refused to confess my sin,
my body wasted away,
and I groaned all day long.
Day and night your hand of discipline was
4 Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water
in the summer heat.

ROOT #2: CIRCUMSTANCES out of your CONTROL

Psalm 6
6 I am worn out from sobbing.
All night I flood my bed with weeping,
drenching it with my tears.
7 My vision is blurred by grief;
my eyes are worn out because of all my
enemies.

1 Kings 19
4 Then he went on alone into the wilderness,
traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom
tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had
enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no
better than my ancestors who have already died.”
5 Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree.
But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and
told him, “Get up and eat!” 6 He looked around and
there beside his head was some bread baked on hot
stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and
lay down again.
7 Then the angel of the LORD came again and
touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more,
or the journey ahead will be too much for you.”

ROOT #3: unrealized EXPECTATIONS

Psalm 43
Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
I will praise him again—
my Savior and my God!

EVENT + INTERPRETATION = RESPONSE

2 Corinthians 4
8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we
are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to
despair. 9 We are hunted down, but never abandoned
by God. We get knocked down, but we are not
destroyed.

Believe the love of God

Hebrews 4
15 This High Priest of ours understands our
weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we
do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the
throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his
mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we
need it most.

Receive the love of God

Philippians 4
8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.
Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and
right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think
about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and
received from me—everything you heard from me
and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be
with you.

Matthew 11
28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who
are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will
give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me
teach you, because I am humble and gentle at
heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

James 1
2 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come
your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.
3 For you know that when your faith is tested,
your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it
grow, for when your endurance is fully
developed, you will be perfect and complete,
needing nothing.
